Music Video Tropes/Memes

The song by Blink182 called All The Small Things was released in 2000 and had scenes on a beach where they made a parody of different music video tropes for pop singers. Such as one of the singers (Tom Delonge) wearing a blonde wig and acting all sweet and innocent and then running in slow motion across the beach in fairly little clothing. Another was them being in a black and white filter, hugging eachother together while they sing. It continues to show these tropes and make them look very silly so we laugh but a lot of people clearly do enjoy these tropes as One Direction actually do use the beach scene from this, whether it was intentional or not I do not know but it's done seriously with the girl running across the beach etc, it's even done on the exact same beach as you can tell from the same rocks in the background; Mind-blowing: Blink 182 mocked One Direction - 11 years before they even existed!
It is very typical of Pop Punk to try to be funny and strange, they don't necessarily have much of a specific trope of their own other than being funny and crazy really.

Music Video History

Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody is considered the first music video but it came about when the band were on tour and couldn't make it to Top Of The Pops each week when it reached no.1 and at nearly 9 minutes long it was considered un-radio-friendly and the record company assumed no radio station would play it, which is when they recorded the video to be played in their absence. Although it looks it doesn't look amazing today it was revolutionary at the time. MTV's first day on the air was August 1, 1981 and then rebroadcast on VH1 Classic in 2006

The first video played on MTV was Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles. But not until Billie Jean by Michael Jackson was MTV then taken seriously, and seen as an alternative to radio. Until then, music videos consisted mainly of bands grinning at the camera from exotic locations.
When Michael Jackson released Thriller and its accompanying video/mini-movie, which was the most requested video of all time, did MTV become the most popular way of discovering.
Since then music video has become an art in its own way. Queen went on to enjoy the video, and it's interesting that when 'I Want To Break Free' was released with its Coronation Street based video, (where the band are all dressed in drag and Freddie Mercury is doing the hoovering) their success in America came to a halt, as American's apparently couldn't cope with 'men' dressed in frocks.

My Brief

The brief I have chosen is no.1
I am going to make a music video,  digipak for the album's release and a magazine advertisement for the digipak.
I think my main influence for these will be the band Biffy Clyro, I very much like their style of video and artwork for their digipak, they have given me a lot of idea's for how I would like to structure my video and what kind of narrative I would like.
The reason I want to do a music video is because I am very passionate about music, I sing and write music and I am in fact using a song I have written for my music video.
My brother has been a big inspiration for me when it comes to music and anything creative, he has some music video's which he recorded on a phone and they don't have a narrative but work well with the songs he has written and fit to his genre and target audience.
I think I have learnt a lot from AS by doing a music magazine, and this helps me look at what meanings can be shown just in an image, obviously this expands a lot when looking at a music video because it is every scene, every moment, everything is there for a reason, every prop etc. I have learnt to do more analysis in advance so that I definitely have all of the information and inspiration before I record my own video; I want to really make it look as professional as possible.
